Scan Black And White Negatives

For most film photographers, scanning black and white negatives has replaced the darkroom printing process. Scanning black and white negatives for most is not the most interesting part of the process, most of us want to share our analog captures on social media so scanning film negatives is the best option we have.

When I scan black and white negatives, I use  an Epson V800 scanner and also a Minolta DImage Scan Muti Pro.

The Epson V800 in my opinion is ideal for both medium Format and Large Format black and white negatives. Although it will scan 35mm negatives, I personally find that the quality of the 35mm scans can be somewhat disappointing.

Scanning Black And White Negatives Software

VueScan is my goto piece of software when scanning black and white negatives but I do also use Silverfast AI Studio on occassions if I need to perform multiple passes of a large format 5×4 negative.

Scan Black And White Negatives With VueScan

VueScan is a computer program for image scanning, especially of photographs, including negatives. It supports optical character recognition of text documents. The software can be downloaded for free, but a watermark is placed on all scans until the user purchases a license.

One of the major advantages of VueScan is that it supports over 6000 different types of scanners. including many of the now obsolete film scanners such as the Minolta Image and Nikon 9000.

VueScan is available for both Mac and Windows operating system and is available both as a Standard and Professional edition.

Scanning Black and White negatives even with a program such as VueScan requires a learning curve if you want to obtain the best scan possible and for this I would strongly suggest investing in the Professional edition of VueScan.
